Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
When a person has experienced something traumatic and the brain never fully processed it, the emotion tied to that traumatic memory is “locked-in” whereas the person can still feel the intense emotions as if the traumatic event just happened. Someone can also be currently triggered by an unrelated circumstance that can also bring up those intense, anxious and hurtful feelings.
It is easy to get caught up within the same emotional memory patterns over and over long after the event had occurred.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing or EMDR, has been extensively used by the Veteran Affairs to treat PTSD symptoms. It is very effective in how it affects the brain in processing information. Successful EMDR sessions help individuals bring up the traumatic memory but without the emotional charge attached to it. It can be used for cravings, anxiety, chronic pain and many other negative and stress-inducing symptoms as well.
